The Canadian Red Cross (CRC) is implementing a major community-based reconstruction and rehabilitation program with the primary focus on shelter construction project in Aceh Besar, Lamno, Calang and Nias for beneficiaries affected by Tsunami of December 26, 2004 and earthquake of March 28, 2005.
We are also implementing Livelihood, Environmental Health and Disaster Preparedness Management programs to help families and communities to improve their live quality. We are looking for qualified and committed candidates to fill the following position on a fixed term contract basis.
Shelter Technician (Ref Code: NIAS-ST), 1 position
Based in Lahewa, Nias
Main responsibilities:
Ø Raises community awareness about CRC Housing Program and represents the CRC with beneficiary communities
Ø Visits each registered prospective beneficiary household with the designated Community Engagement Officer (CEO) and the Village Housing Committee (VHC)
Ø Assesses and records the earthquake damage inflicted on the houses of the registered beneficiaries
Ø Completes all the technical assessment forms with the help of GPS coordinates
Ø Helps the database department in feeding the information gathered (including site conditions, access, and village geography) into Programme Planning activities
Ø Helps CRC in issuing final list of eligible beneficiaries
Ø Ensures that all the eligible beneficiaries have a levelled plot that corresponds to the size of the permanent house
Ø Provides technical training to selected Master Trainers in assembling the kit house
Ø Supervises the work of Master trainers in training beneficiary households in erecting their houses
Ø Provides necessary technical, material and mentoring support to Master Trainers and the village community
Ø Provides weekly and detailed monthly reports on the activities carried out
Ø Any other duties assigned by the Shelter Project Manager
Competencies and skills required for the position:
Ø Bachelor Degree in Civil Engineering and at least 2 years of experience in relevant field or other technical qualification with 5years construction experience
Ø Working knowledge in English preferred
Ø Strong report writing and communication skills in Bahasa Indonesia and English
Ø In good mental and physical health and prepared to live and work in remote villages with adverse field conditions
Ø Strong computer skills: MS Word, Excel
Ø Previous experience of working with Red Cross Movement will be preferred
Ø Ability to communicate in Nias language will be an asset
