The Canadian Red Cross (CRC) is implementing a major community-based reconstruction and rehabilitation program with the primary focus on shelter construction project in Aceh Besar, Lamno, Calang and Nias for beneficiaries affected by Tsunami of December 26, 2004 and earthquake of March 28, 2005.
We are also implementing Livelihood, Environmental Health and Disaster Preparedness Management programs to help families and communities to improve their live quality. We are looking for qualified and committed candidates to fill the following position on a fixed term contract basis.
Shelter Technician (Ref Code: NIAS-ST), 2 positions
Based in Lahewa, Nias
Standard function description:
· To provide a technical link between CRC and the Community in the construction of CRC houses
· To provide efficient training to the carpenters and frame fixers and labour identified by CEO for the construction of the CRC house
· To maintain good working relationship with the labour teams for the successful construction of the CRC houses
· To supervise construction of 4 houses per week
Main responsibilities:
· Ensures that each the eligible beneficiary have a levelled plot that corresponds to the size of the permanent house
· Provides technical training to selected identified labour team in assembling the kit house
· Supervises the work of labour teams in construction of subsequent houses
· Provides necessary technical, material and mentoring support to the identified labour teams in the reading of technical drawings, BoQs and the checking for consistency of quality
· Provides weekly and detailed monthly reports on the activities carried out
· Timely Fills all designated forms e.g. daily Construction Report
· Any other duties assigned by the Shelter Project Manager
Competencies and skills required for the position:
Ø Bachelor Degree in Civil Engineering and at least 2 years of experience in relevant field or other technical qualification with 5years construction experience
Ø Working knowledge in English preferred
Ø Strong report writing and communication skills in Bahasa Indonesia and English
Ø In good mental and physical health and prepared to live and work in remote villages with adverse field conditions
Ø Strong computer skills: MS Word, Excel
Ø Previous experience of working with Red Cross Movement will be preferred
Ø Ability to communicate in Nias language will be an asset
