Build Change (www.buildchange. org) is an award-winning, international non-profit social enterprise with post-earthquake housing reconstruction programs in West Sumatra, Indonesia and Ica, Peru. Build Change has the following position opening, based in West Sumatra, Indonesia.
Program Manager/Structural Engineer (6 month paid contract with possibility of extension).
This challenging position requires a combination of management and coordination skills, structural/earthqua ke engineering design expertise, and hands-on construction experience. The successful candidate will lead the expansion of Build Change's ongoing owner-driven housing reconstruction program in West Sumatra and Bengkulu, Indonesia. Build Change provides hands-on, technical assistance and training directly to homeowners who are rebuilding or repairing earthquake-damaged homes with a cash grant from the Indonesian government.
Program Management Responsibilities •Lead, mentor and expand Build Change's team of 15 Indonesian engineers and construction professionals to work with each homeowner to build an earthquake-resistan t house •Oversee and improve monitoring and evaluation activities, and prepare weekly, monthly, and final reports •Schedule and oversee training programs for builders and technical high school students •Maintain and expand relationships with local government and project partners
Structural Engineering Responsibilities •Revise and update design drawings, bills of quantity, construction checklists, and training materials as necessary, for new and retrofitted confined masonry, reinforced concrete block, and timber construction •Solve problems and generate solutions in the field for special cases, especially retrofits and extensions of existing buildings •Ensure technologies and solutions are consistent with Build Change's philosophy of earthquake-resistan ce, sustainability, and cultural appropriateness •Ensure design and construction standards are met and impacts documented •Identify technical/research questions and coordinate materials testing and experimental work with research partners.
Qualifications: •Professional Engineering license (or equivalent) in civil (structural) engineering •Master's degree in structural engineering or equivalent, with emphasis on earthquake-resistan t design •Minimum 3 years professional experience in structural engineering design •Understanding of earthquake-resistan t design and construction for single family homes in Indonesia •Minimum 2 years professional experience in management position with demonstrated experience managing a team of technical staff and delivering outcomes on time •International development experience, preferably in Asia •Strong personal integrity, patience, and ability to adapt to a challenging environment •Commitment to Build Change's mission and principles of technical competence, equality, sustainability, and transparency •Fluent English •Working knowledge of Bahasa Indonesia is a plus •Immediate availability.
